Senior Azure Cloud Database Administrator
Step into a senior cloud database role where you will design Azure and Cosmos DB solutions, define cost models, and mentor a growing engineering team. This mission blends hands-on architecture with knowledge transfer to make cloud operations sustainable and autonomous.
CONTEXT
Our client, a major player in its sector, is accelerating the modernization of its mission-critical data landscape. The organization has already begun moving key workloads into Azure, but the next chapter requires a senior database specialist who can bring structure, cost intelligence, and long-term operational maturity to the cloud platform. The current team is motivated and technically capable, yet it lacks deep senior expertise across Azure database services, Cosmos DB, and cost governance. This creates a pivotal opening for a hands-on driver who can both design robust solutions and elevate the team through mentoring, documentation, and pragmatic knowledge transfer. The mission is not simply about keeping databases running; it is about shaping a durable cloud data foundation that can support business growth, reduce technical risk, and make the engineering organization more self-sufficient over time.
ACTIVITIES
- Design and implement Azure-based database solutions, including Cosmos DB architectures, data models, resilience patterns, and operational standards.
- Allocate roughly two-thirds of the role to solution design and implementation, with the remaining time dedicated to support, troubleshooting, and team enablement.
- Define and maintain cost models for solutions hosted on Azure, helping stakeholders understand consumption drivers and make informed architectural trade-offs.
- Challenge existing technical decisions where necessary, especially around Azure database services, Cosmos DB usage, scalability, and cost efficiency.
- Provide senior-level support to engineering teams, review technical choices, and help resolve complex database and cloud-platform issues.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through pairing, code and design reviews, runbooks, and structured documentation.
- Create and improve operational documentation so that maintenance activities become repeatable and junior profiles can gain autonomy.
- Collaborate with technical and business stakeholders to translate requirements into reliable, secure, and maintainable cloud data solutions.
EXPECTED ACHIEVEMENTS
- Establish clear and reusable Azure database design patterns that improve consistency and reduce delivery risk.
- Deliver robust Cosmos DB and broader database solutions that meet performance, resilience, and cost-efficiency expectations.
- Introduce practical cost models that give teams visibility into Azure consumption and support better architectural decisions.
- Raise the technical autonomy of the team by documenting critical processes and mentoring engineers on maintenance and support.
- Reduce dependency on external expertise by transferring knowledge and creating a stronger internal cloud database capability.
- Improve operational stability through better support practices, clear escalation paths, and well-understood database standards.
ENVIRONMENT
- Azure cloud platform with a strong focus on database services and Cosmos DB.
- General relational and non-relational database concepts, modeling practices, performance tuning, and operational support.
- Cost modeling and consumption analysis for cloud-hosted solutions.
- Collaboration with engineering and business stakeholders in an international context where English is mandatory.
- Documentation, mentoring, and knowledge-sharing practices designed to upskill junior team members.
- A senior, driver-oriented role requiring the ability to challenge decisions, take ownership, and guide technical direction.
