Vehicle IT Platform Technical Lead

Lead a groundbreaking digitization project for a major public transport operator, developing and implementing a cutting-edge IT platform for their entire vehicle fleet. You will drive technical direction, integrate complex embedded systems, and navigate a multi-vendor environment to deliver the future of smart mobility.

CONTEXT

Our client, a major player in its sector, is a cornerstone of public mobility, moving millions of people daily with their extensive vehicle fleet. They are not just about transportation; they are about connecting communities and innovating for the future. In an ambitious undertaking known as 'IT on board the vehicle', they are embarking on a monumental digital transformation: equipping every vehicle with a new, future-oriented IT platform. This isn't merely an upgrade; it's a fundamental reimagining of the onboard experience, promising enhanced operational efficiency, safety, real-time data capabilities, and superior passenger services. The project involves the complex integration of cutting-edge off-the-shelf hardware and software components with existing legacy systems, all within a challenging multi-vendor environment. This is a critical mission to build the 'nervous system' of their future fleet, setting new standards for smart public transport.

ACTIVITIES

  • Provide expert technical leadership and guidance throughout the entire lifecycle of the 'IT on board the vehicle' project, from design to implementation.
  • Define the technical vision, architecture, and standards for the new vehicle platform, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security.
  • Manage and coordinate technical aspects of external supplier relationships, ensuring their deliverables meet specifications and integrate seamlessly.
  • Oversee the technical integration of diverse off-the-shelf hardware components (e.g., communication units, sensors, display screens) and software solutions into a cohesive platform.
  • Act as the primary technical point of contact (SPOC) for resolving complex integration challenges and architectural dilemmas within the multi-vendor ecosystem.
  • Establish and enforce rigorous quality assurance processes for all technical deliverables, ensuring the highest levels of performance and robustness.
  • Conduct detailed technical reviews of designs, code, and implementation plans from internal and external teams.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks, proposing innovative solutions to ensure project timelines and objectives are met.
  • Mentor and guide junior technical staff, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.

EXPECTED ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Successful development and implementation of a robust, scalable, and future-proof IT platform across the entire vehicle fleet.
  • Seamless integration of diverse hardware and software components from multiple vendors, creating a harmonized and efficient onboard system.
  • A significant increase in operational efficiency, real-time data availability, and enhanced passenger experience across the public transport network.
  • Establishment of clear technical standards and best practices that ensure long-term maintainability and future expandability of the vehicle IT systems.
  • A substantial contribution to the client's reputation as a leader in innovative and sustainable public transportation solutions.

ENVIRONMENT

The role operates within a highly dynamic and technically challenging environment, requiring a blend of strategic vision and hands-on technical expertise. The primary focus is on embedded systems, IoT connectivity, and system integration within a vehicle context. You will work with a range of technologies, including telematics systems, communication protocols (e.g., CAN bus, Ethernet), various operating systems for embedded devices, and potentially cloud-based platforms for data ingestion and analysis. Methodologically, the project combines elements of agile development for rapid iteration with structured systems engineering approaches for critical safety and reliability aspects. Collaboration is key, involving internal engineering teams, project managers, and numerous external technology partners in a multi-vendor ecosystem.
